Well, it's that time of year, lovelies! Wedding season....and who doesn't want to make a splash on their wedding day? I have a special place in my heart for a classic, vintage or vintage inspired wedding dress. They're so unique in comparison to the very modern styles you see coming down the aisle these days! If it isn't completely obvious, I love the glamour and style of Old Hollywood. One of the things I've always been fascinated by are the different hair style of the 30s, 40s and 50s. They were so classy and feminine and deceptively simple looking (however long it actually took to achieve those those alluring looks! Gloves really brings to mind the word "ladylike" for me. I've always adored gloves but you rarely see women wearing them outside of wintry weather. Personally, I think gloves can look adorable and can be made to look totally individual and even modern. I mean, look at Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's-the black dress, the gloves...that look is still gorgeous today. At least...I know I'd still wear a similar look today! Guest Post : Lucille Ball and Hattie Carnegie

We "Lucy lovers" almost have to credit the famous Hattie Carnegie and her salon with the start of Lucy's career. Hattie was born on 15 March 1889 in Vienna and came to New York where she eventually based her fashion empire.

She rose to fame in the 20's and 30's which was the era of hats for women and Hattie started out as a milliner where owned beautiful shop on East Tenth street. She called it Carnegi-Ladies Hatter. After that, she turned her attention to her dress shop which she opened in a much ritzier neighbor hood on the upper West side at 42ND and 49Th streets. Now close to Saks Fifth Avenue, the Hattie Carnegie boutique began to cater to a much different clientele. Hattie sold dresses that were her own design as well as dresses from designers such as the famous Chanel and Dior as well as a costume jewelry line she also designed herself. Believe it or not, she even sold cosmetics, but under a different name.

It wasn't long before Hattie's designs were a major success and client list began to include movie stars and royalty such as the duchess of Windser and Joan Crawford. Hattie died in 1956 but her dresses, hats and jewelry are still prized and highly collectible even today and often go for outrageous prices and they are worth every Penny!

When young Lucy graduated from high school and went to New York City looking for work and to make her mark on the show-biz world, she thought she'd try her hand at acting but when some teachers at the actors studio told her she was basically talentless (can you imagine!!!), knowing she needed to eat, decided to give modeling a try. Thinking that name "Diane Belmont" sounded sophisticated she applied for a job at the famous Hattie's and because of her slim figure, she was hired.

Hattie took a instant liking to the skinny, long-legged girl and saw something in her that that others didn't. She used Lucy more often than her other models because she never complained, worked hard and always maintained a sense of humor. She also had the body to carry off the all the looks in the salon. Hattie also recommended Lucy for the "Chesterfield Girl" billboard ad campaign. It seems as if it was a match made in heaven. This photo is one of our Lucy modeling. I can't be sure if this is a shot where she is wearing one of Hattie's designs or not, but it is beautiful and so is our girl. Despite the fact that Lucy was a redhead (for most of her life anyway)and "they" say redheads shouldn't wear pink, Lucy adored pink and looked gorgeous in it. This particular Hattie Carnegie dress did NOT belong to Lucy but she would have looked gorgeous in it!

Gorgeous 1950s Dress

I am just in love with this dress!! It's from my favorite fashion decade and It's so classic and elegant! I think it's just as wearable today as it was in the 1950s!

Site's Dress Description: A gorgeous 1950's cocktail dress in a pale pinkish beige taffeta and plish black velvet. Fitted velvet bodice with thin straps and three decorative self fabric buttons. Taffeta bust inset with winding black velvet cord trim and prong set rhinestones. The velvet can be folded over to reveal more of the inset if you prefer (as shown in the bodice close up photo) Dress has a full, twirling skirt with black velvet appliques (shown here with a crinoline... not included). Side metal zipper. Bodice is boned.

33" bust, 25" waist, free hips. Approximately 47 1/2" from shoulder to hem.

Condition: In good condition. Hint of shine on the velvet at the underarm edges. Scattered pin head sized orange spots on the skirt (not bad). A large, but faint water type spot on the rear of the skirt. A smaller, but still very faint water type spot under one of the appliques. A pick to the center of the bust inset.

Hemlock Vintage= Amazing Vintage Finds!

Both of these gorgeous 50s dresses immediately caught my eye. They're both completely different but utterly stunning! I hope you love them as much as I do!

Info:
Dramatic 1950's thick cream satin and fine black net lace evening dress from the high end department store Harzfeld's Kansas City. Dress is beautifully tailored with many details. The bodice is basically cut like a bustier with boning inserted inside. It is not just cut straight across, but has unique jutting pieces where the straps meet the bodice. The neckline is also shaped and curved. The straps are the satin fabric that has been cinched with elastic and then appliqued with rosettes of black lace. The back also has this shaped neckline with subtle points. The shoulder straps can be removed and may have been added to the dress for modesty - making the dress strapless would show off the unique neckline. As far as the skirt, the black lace is not an overskirt, but is painstakingly sewn onto the satin underneath and overlaps the hem just an inch or two to give the impression it is separate. The skirt is backed with a starched white net with a stiff facing through the hem, allowing the skirt to retain it's form. Side metal zipper. Labels read, "Harzfeld's Kansas City" and "Wilmont Original."

Condition: very good. Some small minor breaks to the lace, but nothing noticeable.

1950s Silk & Lace Elinor Gay Original

Description:
What a wonderful dress from the fifties! It has a definite Grace Kelly kind of look to it! Soft cotton machine lace is set in a panel that circles the entire, very full, skirt. The same lace sits over a strapless bodice that peeks out through the lace when worn. A wide sash waist draws in the eye and the silk will create a wonderful swish sound as you walk. It's a stunning example of the era and a beautifully constructed garment in pristine condition. the only hint that it was ever worn at all is the very occasional piece of confetti in the seams of the bodice. I think it would be bad luck to remove them!

1950s Silk Organza Cocktail Dress

Description: An absolutely beautiful cocktail dress in silk organza. The sheer organza lies over a black base skirt and a floral stitched bodice in cream. The hint of flowers peeking through the organza creates the most wonderful effect. The skirt is full and the sleeves puff and end in an extravagant cuff. Its a spectacular piece of 1950s workmanship and the perfect ensemble for a more formal cocktail party.

Vintage Louis Vuitton Trunk

While these lovely trunks may not be necessary for traveling any longer, they are still a gorgeous vintage find that would make any fashionista's home look all the more gorgeous. I absolutely love the idea of a vintage LV trunk. They are exceptionally pricey but I've seen so many creative ways to use them, they become part of the decor of your house, or huge dressing room. Anyway-I thought I'd share, since even if we can't all afford them, nice things are fun to look at!

Info: Vintage Louis Vuitton Trunk is in Excellent Condition, c1900. Featuring Serial Number 745885 and Lock number 050575 Fitted with one interior tray, leather trim and beech wood slats on the exterior. The LV Monogram canvas carries a hand painted blue “H” on the top, and “H.L. d’ A.H.” on the sides. One of my favorite decades for evening wear is the 1930s. It was all about elegance and glamour, everything was very ladylike. I absolutely love the long evening gowns and all the gorgeous details. I think 1930s gowns are still very wearable today for a formal event and you'd most definitely make a grand entrance in a beautiful vintage 1930s gown! Style Trends of the 1920s

The 1920s were indeed roaring! So much in fashion changed during this time-from women's under garments to dresses. There were no more corsets or bustles and hemlines were much higher from calf length to knee length (for a brief period in the mid to late 20s). Very thin, boyish figures were very fashionable during this period, as the particular style of clothing fell better on such figures than a curvy woman. Larger busted women actually would wrap their chests to flatten them to better suit the fashions. The things we do for fashion, right? (Hehe;-)

Here are some of the fashion and style trends from the roaring 20s:

What was in for Clothing and Fashion: Sleeveless garments, beading, plunging necklines and low backs, knit sweaters, dropped waists, calf and knee length skirts, hats, feathers, lace, fur, mary jane shoes

What was in for Makeup: The eyes were the emphasis in the 20s. Smokey eye makeup and false eye lashes with very thin eye brows. Lips were usually made to look more narrow, dark and very defined.

What was in for Hair: The short "bob" was in. Wearing it straight, wavy or curly, all were seen in the 20s. Short hair was very chic.

I don't know about you guys but I can't seem to get enough of vintage clothing and accessories! I almost wish we lived in a time when people still dressed up or dinner and wore dresses on a regular basis. That's not to say I don't love modern fashion, it's just a nice thought. Of course, we can still do that-dress for dinner, wear pretty dresses on a regular basis, it's just not common anymore. That's okay though, because being unique is fun and fabulous! Okay, first, I absolutely fell in love with this amazing 1950s Ceil Chapman Couture gown found on C. Madeleine’s.

Here's the description:
Ceil Chapman couture black lace and taffeta gown from the 1950's. A strapless evening gown with an asymmetrical ruched waistline in taffeta. Skirt is sheer lace with a lining of tulle. An oversized bow on right hip also in taffeta. Inner boning and waistband. Side zipper closure and a single hook and eye.

This amazing gown is in nearly mint condition!

Cocktail rings are a great way to display style-especially your unique personal style (Being Unique is key to being a style icon, after all!). Cocktail rings are almost always better when they're costume than when they're real. Vintage or vintage inspired rings are really special and eye-catching. They're also meant to be bold and make a statement so don't be shy, go big and dramatic!

Add A Little Vintage with...A Brooch

You can wear them in so many different ways, that it pays to have a couple in your jewelry box. Why not go vintage too? It adds a specialness to any outfit to have a piece of jewelry that tells a story all it's own! Here are a few ideas on how to wear brooches:

1) You can add a beautiful brooch to a hairstyle to add an unexpected touch of glamour!

This Academy Award winning, Italian born actress was born on September 20, 1934. She's not only a talented actress but was an international sex symbol and is still considered one of the most beautiful women of film. At the age of 14, Sophia Loren (then known by her given name of Sofia Villani Scicolone) was a finalist in a Beauty Contest in Naples. She later began taking acting classes and was an extra in a film called "Quo Vadis", which began her career in films.

Become a Style Icon

There are only a handful of true style icons out there and you could be one of them! Some of my style icons are Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, and Sophia Loren. So clearly, my favorite style "era" are the 50s. I also love the 40s and 60s but the 50s suit my body type more.

So, one of the best ways to tell what your "Icon" style type would be is to figure out what you love. Are you a 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, or 70s kind of girl?

Another important part of being a style icon is to mix vintage with new trends and styles. Don't go overboard with everything being from the 40s and 50s. You don't want to look like you're in a time warp. Also, try not to copy any look exactly-it can be boring and style icons are never boring!

Try to pick an era that suits your figure. If you're very straight and thin, 20s inspired pieces will fit your shape more so than a 50s style would. If you're curvy with a tiny waist, 50s styles would be your best bet. So start adding a little vintage into your life!

Tutorial: 50s Inspired Makeup Look

The 50s were all about femininity and sensuality. Bombshell beauties like Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sophia Loren ruled the silver screen. They were radiant, beautiful, sexy, and irresistible. They gave the impression they could get any man they wanted and they probably could!

Here's the finished look:

Eyes:

Lips:

Their makeup reflected these features. Luckily for you bombshells, 50s style makeup is fairly easy to execute! Here's How:

How to get the eyes:

1) Use a neutral eyeshadow base from lash line to brow.

2) Blend a mid-tone brown eyeshadow into crease to contour.

3)Next apply a white-ish shadow from lash line to brow bone over the brown in the crease.

4) Line the upper lash line with a black liquid or cream/gel eyeliner sloping the line slightly down and out for a sleepy eyed effect.

5)You can us false lashes but weather you use real or fake, enhance those lashes with dark mascara! the smudge a little black shadow lightly on the outer half of your lower lash line.

How to get the Lips!

Make sure your lips are nice and smooth. For this, I use a lip brush and applied the lipstick that way. That's really the only step, just make sure you have a nice precise lip line, you can line your lips with liner if it's easier for you. Go with a red liner that's a close match to your lipstick:-)

Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jean Baker on June 1, 1926. Marilyn started out modeling before being signed with Twentieth Century Fox which is when she changed her name from Norma to Marilyn at the suggestion of the studio. She was truly glamorous and talented which is often overlooked.

I've loved Marilyn since I was a little girl. I adore her movies and her style. Her story is a very sad on but in my opinion, despite all her troubles, I believe her to be a not only a great lady but an inspirational one as well. I think Elton John's song "Candle in the Wind" captured her perfectly.

Marilyn will be loved and admired forever.
